Being a parent of Hinesight mentee

In school and out, a mentor can make a world of a difference for your child.  Hinesight’s mentoring program is designed to make sure that having fun and mentoring go hand in hand.  You child will be paired with a trained mentor that will work with your child in a one-on-one mentoring relationship that offers training, encouragement and support.  Our mentees are also encouraged to build friendships and alliances with monthly group activities and meetings with other Hinesight mentees.

We believe in mentoring with a purpose.

Mentoring should be extremely fun for a young person while also being extremely effective in helping a young person grow into a healthy young adult through a nurturing, responsible, and committed adult mentor.

What do we focus on with our mentees

It’s not just about school, Hinesight is here to help young people thrive in school and out of the classroom. At Hinesight, our mentoring program uses a developmental approach. This means the main focus of our mentors is on the relationship with their mentee: learning who they are and spending time getting to know them, their interests, and what they like to do and building that into a comprehensive program that engages and encourages as well as teaches so the lessons learned in the classroom can help them in their lives and communities beyond.

Hinesight’s mentors also focus on intertwining a structured, activities-based curriculum into the relationship and the time the mentor and mentee spend together.
Through community conversations and best-practice research, we have geared our curriculum to focus on 5 areas of development to help our mentees cultivate:

  • Social Competencies
  • Commitment to Learning
  • Positive Identity
  • Empowerment
  • Positive Values

Our curriculum

We like to think of our mentoring program as a “Road Map.”

Hinesight recognizes that every young person is different, with different needs and different aspirations. One mentee may need to work on one area more than the other first, that’s okay!  The relationship that our mentors form with our mentees is cultivated in order to find the best place to start, the most exciting way to approach and the most effective way to achieve positive results.

Our mentoring program uses adult volunteers to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young person for a period of at least one year. We train our mentors with National Mentor Resource designed volunteer training sessions hosted and facilitated by our staff at Hinesight.

The starting point may vary based on the needs of our mentees but the finish line is the same: Hinesight wants to help form well rounded young adults who thrive in and out of school!
